Spend two nights beneath one of the most spectacular glaciers in the Yukon and Northern British Columbia.
Explore wildflower-filled alpine valleys, watch the light change across the ice, and experience one of the most remarkable glacier landscapes within the vast UNESCO World Heritage mountain region.

Tucked away in the remote Tatshenshini-Alsek region, Samuel Glacier is one of the most spectacular and accessible glacier landscapes in the North. Over four days, we'll journey deep into this incredible mountain wilderness, establish a basecamp beside the glacier, and spend a full day exploring the surrounding alpine terrain.

After hiking into the glacier basin, we'll spend two nights beneath towering peaks and flowing ice. Our dedicated exploration day allows us to venture further into the landscape, with objectives chosen based on conditions and group ability. Depending on the day, we may explore glacial moraines, alpine meadows, nearby ridges, wildflower-filled slopes, or panoramic viewpoints overlooking the glacier.

More than simply a backpacking trip, this is an opportunity to fully experience the glacier basin and the rugged mountain wilderness that surrounds it. With a full day dedicated to exploration, we'll have the flexibility to venture onto alpine ridges, explore glacial moraines, and discover viewpoints that most visitors never reach.

Along the way, we'll travel through one of the most beautiful mountain corridors in the North, following the Haines Highway past turquoise lakes, broad valleys, and dramatic mountain scenery before reaching the trailhead.

If you've been dreaming about a true glacier backpacking adventure without committing to a major expedition, this trip offers the perfect balance of challenge, exploration, and wilderness immersion.

  • Itinerary

DAY 1 | INTO THE MOUNTAINS

Our adventure begins in Whitehorse, where we'll meet the crew, go over the plan for the days ahead, and make sure everyone is dialed in for the expedition.

From there, we'll follow the Alaska Highway toward Haines Junction, where vast valleys, glacier-fed rivers, and distant mountain ranges provide a fitting introduction to the adventure ahead. As we skirt the edge of Kluane National Park, home to Canada's highest mountains and the world's largest non-polar icefields, the scenery only gets bigger.

By afternoon, we'll reach the Haines Pass region and continue deeper into the mountains toward our trailhead. After settling into the Squatch Bus for the evening, we'll complete our gear check, review expedition logistics, and enjoy a hearty dinner beneath the peaks.

Tomorrow, we shoulder our packs and head for Samuel Glacier.

DAY 2 | BACKPACK TO SAMUEL GLACIER

Today we leave the road behind.

Shouldering our packs, we'll follow the historic Chuck Creek Trail deep into the heart of the Tatshenshini-Alsek wilderness. The route winds through open valleys, alpine terrain, and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery as the glacier slowly reveals itself ahead.

By afternoon, we'll arrive at our wilderness basecamp beside Samuel Glacier.

This is where things start to feel properly wild.

We'll spend the evening exploring around camp, watching the changing light dance across the ice, and soaking in the scale of one of the most impressive glacier landscapes in northwestern Canada.

DAY 3 | GLACIER EXPLORATION DAY

No heavy packs today.

With camp established beneath the glacier, we'll spend the day exploring further into this incredible mountain landscape.

Depending on conditions and group objectives, we may venture onto nearby alpine ridges, explore glacial moraines, wander through wildflower-filled valleys, or seek out panoramic viewpoints overlooking the glacier basin.

There is no fixed objective.

This is a true exploration day.

The goal is simple: go discover cool stuff.

Expect big views, endless photo opportunities, and the kind of terrain that makes you stop mid-hike and say, "Well... that's ridiculous."

After a full day of adventure, we'll return to camp for one final evening beneath the glacier.

DAY 4 | RETURN TO WHITEHORSE

After breakfast and one last look at the glacier, we'll pack up camp and begin our journey back toward the trailhead.

As we make our way down the valley, we'll have one final chance to soak in the towering peaks, glacial landscapes, and wild terrain that have been our home for the past few days. Back at the Squatch Bus, we'll begin the scenic drive through the Haines Pass region and make our way back toward Whitehorse.

The expedition may be over, but don't be surprised if Samuel Glacier keeps showing up in your camera roll, daydreams, and future trip plans for quite a while.

Somewhere along the drive, somebody will probably already be planning their next trip.
