The ultimate Yukon backcountry ski expedition.
Chase deep snow, ski wild northern terrain, and live out of the Squatch Bus for a full week of backcountry skiing, road tripping, sauna sessions, and mountain life.
Forget resorts. Forget lift lines. This is skiing stripped down to what it’s meant to be: earning your turns in remote terrain, traveling with a small crew, and waking up each day ready to chase the next zone.
Welcome to the Squatch Bus — a converted American school bus turned winter-ready cabin on wheels. With a woodstove burning, diesel heat, gear drying systems, a gear trailer, and even a mobile sauna setup, this is ski bum culture Yukon-style.
Each morning we roll out into the legendary Haines Pass region, exploring the wild mountains surrounding Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park on the border of Yukon and northern British Columbia. With endless touring possibilities, huge alpine terrain, and constantly changing conditions, no two days are ever the same.
Led by ACMG-certified ski guides, you’ll not only ski incredible terrain, but also build confidence moving through the winter backcountry. This is adventure + education combined — the kind of experience that turns skiers into true mountain people.
And after a full day in the mountains, we return to basecamp for good food, firelight, sauna steam, and stories swapped around the bus.
This is vanlife meets ski bum paradise:
- Backcountry ski touring in the Yukon & northern British Columbia
- Skiing around Haines Pass & Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park
- Small group expedition experience
- Flexible objectives based on conditions
- Woodstove nights, sauna sessions, and remote camps
- Travel aboard the legendary Squatch Bus
This is Into the White.
A week of skiing, road tripping, mountain living, and chasing winter across the North.

Day 1 – Arrival in Whitehorse & Journey to basecamp
Day 1 – Arrival in Whitehorse & Journey to basecamp
Your guides will pick you up in Whitehorse in the morning. We’ll do a full gear check, avalanche safety orientation, and pack up before hitting the road north. The drive itself is an adventure, winding through snowy Yukon landscapes until we reach Haines Pass — your home for the week. You’ll move into the Squatch Bus, get your gear organized in the trailer, and settle in with a hot meal, woodstove warmth, and a first round in the sauna.
If the skies are clear, you might even catch your first glimpse of the northern lights.
Day 2 – First turns in the Pass
Day 2 – First turns in the Pass
Wake up to the smell of coffee and breakfast in the bus. After a quick snowpack update and guide briefing, we’ll head out for our first ski tour.
Today is about warming up the legs and reviewing backcountry basics: efficient skinning, avalanche safety, and group travel.
Expect mellow bowls and tree runs, chasing powder while building confidence as a team. Evening: sauna, dinner, and stories around the bus.
Day 3 – Exploring new zones
Day 3 – Exploring new zones
With legs warmed up, we’ll push deeper into the pass. Depending on conditions, this might mean alpine bowls, couloirs, or rolling powder fields.
You’ll practice terrain choice, safe line selection, and travel techniques with your guides. This is the day the group starts to really feel like a backcountry crew.
Back at camp, you’ll dry gear in the trailer, then relax with another sauna session under the stars.
Day 4 – Big Tour Day
Day 4 – Big Tour Day
Today we go further. Expect a longer tour with more vertical — perhaps a ridgeline ascent or a lap into a classic zone. We’ll pack lunch and stay out for a full-day mission. Guides will share advanced techniques: route-finding, snowpack observations, and efficient transitions.
By the time we get back, the sauna is hot, dinner is ready, and the bus feels like the coziest place on earth.
Day 5 – Steep & Deep (Conditions depending)
Day 5 – Steep & Deep (Conditions depending)
If snow and stability allow, today is about pushing for the trip’s most exciting lines. It could be a classic couloir, an alpine face, or simply lapping the deepest powder stashes. If conditions are stormy, we’ll find sheltered tree zones — because storm skiing in the Yukon can be just as epic.
Back at basecamp, another big dinner and maybe a rooftop northern lights session.
Day 6 – Choose your own adventure
Day 6 – Choose your own adventure
Our final ski day is tailored to the group. Strong legs? We’ll go for another big push. Tired? We’ll keep it playful and fun in a closer zone. Either way, today is about soaking it all in — the snow, the mountains, the bus, the crew you’ve bonded with all week.
Evening celebration: sauna, final feast, and swapping highlights of the trip.
Day 7 – Hot Springs & Farewell
Day 7 – Hot Springs & Farewell
We pack up camp and drive back to Whitehorse. On the way, we’ll stop at the local hot springs to ease tired legs and celebrate an incredible week.
Drop-off in town in the afternoon, full of new skills, new friends, and memories from a trip unlike anything else in the ski world.
Fitness & Skill level – What to expect
Fitness & Skill level – What to expect
This trip is designed for adventurous skiers and riders who want to explore the backcountry in the Yukon. You don’t need to be an expert, but you do need a solid base.
Ski ability: Comfortable skiing blue runs at a resort and able to handle variable snow conditions (powder, windblown, crust).
Fitness: In good physical shape — expect to climb up to 1,000m of elevation per day on skis/skins while carrying your gear.
Avalanche training: AST-1 or equivalent is a bonus, but not required. Our ACMG guides will provide safety refreshers and teach you along the way.
Mindset: Open to full days outside in Arctic winter conditions. Strong legs and a sense of adventure will take you further than expert skills.
And for those looking for an extra challenge: try to outlast your guides in the sauna. Cold snow dips required afterwards… just kidding (sort of 😉).
👉 If you can ski a blue run with confidence, keep moving uphill for a few hours at a time, and bring the stoke — you’ll be ready for this trip.
