Three days in Kluane’s wild heart, hike the Slim’s River valley, camp by Canada Creek, and climb high on Observation Mountain for glacier views that steal your breath.

This is not just a hike, it’s a deep dive into one of Canada’s most spectacular wilderness areas. Over three days, we follow the Slim’s River (A’äy Chu) West trail, a classic Yukon route that winds along wide river terraces, through sandy flats, and across creeks that shift with the seasons. The scenery changes step by step: open tundra, sweeping riverbeds, and towering peaks guarding the horizon.

We’ll make camp near Canada Creek, a quiet riverside spot about halfway up the valley. From here, the real adventure begins, a summit push up Observation Mountain. There’s no official trail here, just route finding and steady climbing beside creeks and ridgelines until the world suddenly opens up. At the top, you’re rewarded with one of the greatest views in the Yukon: the vast Kaskawulsh Glacier snaking through the valley, a frozen river of ice stretching as far as the eye can see.

Along the way, your ACMG-certified guide shares skills and stories, from reading terrain and crossing creeks safely to spotting wildlife sign and understanding the geology and history of Kluane. Grizzlies, moose, and Dall sheep roam this landscape, and we travel respectfully in their home.

This trip is challenging, raw, and unforgettable. You’ll carry your pack, cross cold creeks, and tackle rugged terrain. But you’ll also gain confidence in the backcountry, share campfire meals under Yukon skies, and walk away with a memory that feels bigger than words: standing high above the Kaskawulsh, with the North laid out below you.

Total Distance: approx. 60 km (round trip)
Elevation Gain: approx. 1,800 m (including Observation Mountain)
Difficulty: Challenging, best for adventurous hikers with solid fitness and some backpacking experience. Conditions vary with weather, terrain, and creek crossings.
Region: Kluane National Park

Note: This route includes off trail sections. Distances and elevation gain are approximate and can vary on each trip depending on weather and terrain conditions.

Day 1

Arrive & Hike to the Campsite

We’ll meet early in the morning at the trailhead, and if you need a ride from Whitehorse, we’ll be happy to provide that. After introductions and a quick briefing, we’ll distribute the group gear into your backpacks and hand out the food for the trip. Once we’re all packed and ready, we’ll start our hike towards the campsite.

The hike will take us through stunning wilderness, gradually gaining elevation as we approach our camp. After setting up our tents and settling in, we’ll have time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding landscape. We'll prepare a delicious dinner, share stories around the campfire, and spend our first night immersed in the Yukon wilderness.

Day 2

Ascent of Observation Mountain & Return to Camp

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll begin our ascent of Observation Mountain. The hike will take us through beautiful terrain, with opportunities to spot mountain goats and take in incredible views as we approach the ridge. Once we reach the top, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the Kaskawulsh Glacier, the Ä’äy Chù River, and the surrounding valleys.

You don’t need to reach the summit for a spectacular view—the plateau offers an amazing vantage point of the glacier and the valleys below. After enjoying the scenery and taking photos, we’ll descend back to the campsite, where you’ll have the rest of the evening to relax. Enjoy a well-deserved dinner, watch the sunset, and reflect on the day’s adventure under the stars.

Day 3

Hike Back to the Trailhead

On our final day, we’ll pack up camp and begin our return hike back to the trailhead. As we make our way back, you’ll have time to reflect on the beauty of the trip and the skills you’ve learned along the way. Once we reach the trailhead in the afternoon, we’ll say our goodbyes, and if you need a ride back to Whitehorse, we’ll take care of that for you.

By the end of the trip, you’ll have unforgettable memories and a deep connection to the wild beauty of Kluane National Park.
